Tide Predictions
The Housatonic River is tidal downstream of the Derby/Shelton Dam. Please check tide tables for Shelton CT and Stratford CT before paddling this stretch.
Tide tables provide important information on times and height of tides. The strongest currents are generally mid-way between high and low tides. The difference between high and low tides can sometimes be drastic. The greatest differences occur near the full and new moons, while the least differences are near the quarter moons.
At 12 noon on Monday, September 20, 2010, we put in under the Route 8 Bridge in Shelton CT. High tide at Shelton was at 11:35am and at 10:36am at Bondʼs Dock in Stratford CT, our destination. The timing was perfect. The tide pulled us downstream toward Long Island Sound for the entire 3 hour trip (we were fortunate to have winds from the north!)
